What are Male Hormones?

Hormones are your body’s chemical messengers. They are produced by endocrine glands and secreted directly into the bloodstream, which they use to travel to tissues or organs. Once here, they exert their function. As such, hormones have effects throughout the body. They’re essential for coordinating various bodily functions and overall good health.

Male hormones, also known as male androgens, refer to the group of hormones known for giving men their “male” characteristics. The primary male hormone is testosterone, which is produced in the testes. Testosterone is responsible for hair growth, sperm development, and vocal cord lengthening at puberty. It also plays an essential role throughout life in bone density regulation, muscle development, red blood cell production, and sexual desire and function.

With such powerful and widespread effects on the body, male hormones are vital for overall good health. It follows that deficiencies in male hormones contribute to various significant health issues. And sadly, the prevalence of androgen deficiency is high among the male population; men’s testosterone levels are 20% less on average than they were twenty years ago.

These men with low testosterone suffer a range of symptoms, including:

Low libido and erection problems

Depression, anxiety, and irritability

Reduced confidence and assertiveness

Low energy levels and fatigue

Loss of muscle mass or physical performance

Men’s hormone tests help you determine whether or not androgen deficiency is responsible for these symptoms, acting as the first step in formulating an effective treatment plan. Your hormone levels may qualify you for testosterone replacement therapy or provide a better understanding of what lifestyle changes can improve your symptoms.
